Artist Catherine Lewis is grateful to businesses at the Beaches for their support of her art.

Lewis is a mixed media artist, abstract painter, photographer and member of The Art Center (TAC) at the Landing.  She received her B.A. in English Education at the University of Florida and a B.A. in Fine Arts/Cinematography from the University of South Florida. She is currently studying drawing, painting, and photography at the University of North Florida after retiring from teaching at Stanton College Preparatory School. She is the president of “Sandy Toes Society” along with her partner Gary Crumley.

“My mixed media exploration emerged first as I used eggshells to add texture to tree bark in my eggshell paintings. The more I worked with the shells, the more I began to appreciate the form and feel of the organic material.”

Lewis approached Monkey’s Uncle ’s Tavern in Jacksonville Beach and asked if they would donate eggshells from their Sunday brunch. The painting “Monkey Eggs” is now on display as part of Lewis’ June “Featured Artist” show at The Art Center.

Expanding on her fascination with organic materials, Lewis has begun experimenting with camera-less photography making photograms and lumen prints to create a Petals & Lace series. “I love the historical aspect of this process which dates back to the 1830’s when Henry Talbot created “photogenic drawings.” Lewis composes lily petals and lace on photo sensitized paper, sandwiches them under glass, and places outdoors on a sunny day to expose.

The last step is to fix the image, wash and dry. “I enjoy the chance aspect of this process; you can’t exactly predict your results, and that’s exciting to me as an artist. Lewis collaborated with Lori Whitmarsh at Seahorse Florist Boutique at Jacksonville Beach to pick lilies and other flowers which would appear translucent and create an interesting composition.
